The play, depicting the life and death of Jesus, is now performed in the years ending in zero, except in 1984 which marked the 350th anniversary. It involves over 2,000 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians - all residents of the village.
In 2010, the work will premiere on Saturday, May 15 and will be staged for a total of 102 days. 2010 also marks a change in presentation.
The Oberammergau play runs for about 7 hours. For the first time, the performance will begin in the afternoon and the second part will be performed in the evening. The first part begins at 2:30 pm and ends at 5:00 pm; part two begins at 8:00 pm and ends at 10:30 pm. The seating can hold up to 4,700 people.
