Agent Spotlight: Danube River Cruise Adventure

Danube River Cruise Adventure

– By Suzanne Newby

River cruising offers a wonderful way to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the comfort of unpacking just once. This year, I had the opportunity to experience AmaWaterways’ Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary, travelling from Budapest, Hungary, to Giurgiu, Romania, from March 30 to April 6.

This journey along the Danube explored five countries, offering a wonderful mix of history, culture, local cuisine and beautiful scenery. Here are some highlights, along with a few helpful tips for anyone considering this itinerary.

The Journey Begins — A Little Time in England

Before the river cruise adventure began, there was a lovely stop in England and some special time spent with family. A day along the coast, exploring the pier and enjoying some classic local treats — chips and ice cream!

Sometimes, it’s these simple moments that make travelling so memorable.

From England, the journey continued to Budapest, where a few days of exploring awaited before boarding AmaWaterways.

Exploring Budapest Before the Cruise

Allowing extra time in Budapest before embarking is highly recommended. This beautiful city has so much to offer, from its magnificent architecture to its fascinating history.

Highlights include the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church, St. Stephen’s Basilica and the iconic Chain Bridge.

A visit to the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial offers a more reflective experience, providing insight into the city’s difficult history and the people whose stories shaped it.

Budapest is also a wonderful destination for food lovers. Hungarian goulash, traditional chimney cake (kürtőskalács) and the Central Market Hall are all worth experiencing. Don’t forget to pick up some Hungarian paprika to bring home!

Travel tip: If your river cruise begins or ends in Budapest, consider adding a few extra days to explore the city at your own pace.

Five Countries Along the Danube

The Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary travels through five countries, with a variety of ports and experiences along the way:

• Hungary: Budapest and Mohács
• Croatia: Vukovar
• Serbia: Belgrade and Golubac (Iron Gates)
• Bulgaria: Vidin and Rousse
• Romania: Giurgiu

Life Onboard: Comfort, Cuisine & Entertainment

One of the greatest advantages of river cruising is the convenience of unpacking once while waking up in a new destination along the way.

AmaWaterways offers a range of stateroom and suite categories, with different layouts, sizes and balcony options to suit various preferences and budgets.

Dining is another highlight, with fresh ingredients and local flavours incorporated into the onboard menus, allowing guests to experience the region through its cuisine.

There are also thoughtful inclusions that enhance the experience, such as:

• Complimentary cocktail hour before dinner
• Wine and beer with lunch and dinner
• Sparkling wine at breakfast
• Daily onboard updates through the AmaWaterways app

Bringing the Culture Onboard

I loved how AmaWaterways brought the destinations onboard. We enjoyed a spectacular professional opera singer and young local dancers who performed for us.

For guests who enjoy staying active, wellness activities such as yoga, stretching, fitness, hiking and cycling are also available. There’s even a walking and running track on the top deck!

Is River Cruising Suitable for Solo Travellers?

Absolutely! River cruising can be a wonderful option for solo travellers.

The welcoming onboard atmosphere, shared dining experiences, group excursions and entertainment make it easy to meet fellow guests and enjoy the journey together.

Travelling independently doesn’t mean spending the entire holiday alone. In fact, it can be a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and discover destinations at your own pace.

For anyone considering solo travel but unsure where to start, a river cruise is certainly worth exploring.

A Practical Tip: Giurgiu & Bucharest Transfers

One important detail to consider is transportation after disembarking in Giurgiu, Romania.

Giurgiu is approximately an hour from Bucharest, although traffic can make the journey considerably longer.

If you’re planning to explore Bucharest or travel to the airport after your cruise, arranging transportation in advance is strongly recommended.

Options include booking a transfer through the cruise line, arranging a private transfer or sharing transportation with fellow guests to make it more economical.

A little advance planning can make the end of your journey much smoother.

Is the Gems of Southeast Europe Itinerary Right for You?

For travellers who enjoy history, culture, beautiful scenery, local food and wine, AmaWaterways’ Gems of Southeast Europe offers a wonderful opportunity to discover destinations beyond Europe’s major capitals.

From Budapest’s remarkable architecture to the Iron Gates along the Danube, each stop offers something different. Combined with comfortable accommodations, onboard dining, cultural entertainment and a variety of excursions, it’s a memorable way to experience Southeast Europe.
