Antarctica: A Journey to the Edge of the World
By Donna Wagar
From the moment I departed Ushuaia, the southernmost city on Earth, I knew this wasn’t going to be an ordinary itinerary. Snowcapped mountains framed the horizon as we set sail, leaving behind the familiar and stepping into something far more profound.
Crossing the legendary Drake Passage is often described as a rite of passage—and yes, the “Drake Shake” lived up to its reputation. But here’s the reality: it’s all part of the anticipation. That build-up, that raw connection to the elements, makes your first glimpse of Antarctica even more powerful.

And then… you see it.
Silence.
A kind of stillness that’s almost surreal.
Endless frozen landscapes stretching beyond what the eye can comprehend. Penguins waddling along, carefully carrying rocks to build their nests. Minke whales surfacing playfully near the ship. Seals resting peacefully atop drifting icebergs. Overhead, petrels and albatrosses glide effortlessly through the crisp Antarctic air.
In those moments, you don’t just observe nature—you feel part of it.
Sailing with HX Expeditions meant experiencing this environment with intention and respect. The ship moved quietly along the shoreline, minimizing impact while maximizing connection. Every detail felt aligned with preserving the magic of this untouched world.
My home for this journey, the MS Fridtjof Nansen, struck a beautiful balance between rugged exploration and thoughtful comfort. After full days of adventure—often heading out on Zodiac landings to step directly onto the Antarctic continent—I could unwind in the sauna, relax in the hot tub, or even sit by the pool watching icebergs drift by. It’s a rare combination: high-end comfort in one of the most remote places on Earth.

This is not a passive cruise—it’s an expedition. Each day brings new opportunities, weather permitting. From Zodiac excursions to optional activities like sea kayaking, snowshoeing, or even camping overnight on the ice under the stars… this is travel that asks you to be present.
And it gives back more than you expect.
If you’re someone who values nature, meaningful experiences, and stories that stay with you long after you return home—this is worth every moment it takes to get there.
I found myself standing on deck, taking it all in, quietly saying: How lucky am I to be here?
And eventually: I love you, Antarctica. Thank you for sharing your beauty with me
